AGORA

The AGORA project enabled members of the public, voluntary bodies, schools and other end-users to establish an online presence and to interact with one another online, in a 'virtual community' which mirrored the physical one in which they live. It provided software, hardware, training and support to enable this to occur, using the traditionally open, inclusive and supportive environment of the public library.

Users were empowered to create online content of their own, to participate in discussion fora and digital democracy initiatives, to establish their own sites and applications and to take ownership of the Internet medium. By creating their own content, and by participating with other members of their local community in so doing, the relevance of the material was assured.

The AGORA servers will include links to and content from local cultural bodies, not least the local libraries, in order to encourage a 'sense of place', an online representation of the physical community. This will be strengthened by the use of local material such as community notices, transport timetables, local buy & sell, etc.
