NUI Maynooth Library Receives Death Row Correspondence

On Thursday 10th November, the NUI Maynooth Library received a donation of letters and unpublished poems by Nigerian writer and activist Ken Saro-Wiwa. The letters, to missionary Sister Majella McCarron from Co. Fermanagh, give an amazing insight into Saro-Wiwa’s peaceful campaign against the destruction of his homeland by oil exploration. They were smuggled out of the Port Harcourt detention centre where he was held during the two years leading up to his execution on 10th November 1995.

The donation of the Ken Saro-Wiwa archive by Sister Majella to the Library at NUI Maynooth, is a very significant event”, commented University Librarian Cathal McCauley. “I know that generations of students and researchers will derive great benefit from this wonderful gift.  It is particularly timely, with our major library extension project, which will include a new special collections and archives area.
