Library Staff and HSE Clinical Psychologists had identified a need to provide quality information to the people of North Cork on how to look after their emotional well-being as part of their overall health. Meetings began in February 2011 around partnering the setting up of a community based positive self help programme. The main component of the Your Good Self programme is the bibliotherapy scheme.
A wide range of resources on emotional well-being which have been reviewed by local HSE Clinical Psychologists and other Health Professionals are now available at Mallow library. These include books, CDs, DVDs and lists of websites. The resources are practical and helpful and cover a variety of topics including parenting, stress management and self-esteem. Lists of these materials are available in the library and can also be accessed through local GPs, health professionals, teachers and other individuals working in the community. The lists are also available on the HSE and Cork County Library websites. To date the project has proved very popular. Customers are reading from the list and are invited to take ownership of the project by filling out feedback forms and recommending new books for the list. Cork County Library hopes to develop this programme further into other areas of the County over the next year.
