8.1 EuropeanaLocal

An Chomhairle is participating in EuropeanaLocal, a three-year project, begun in June 2008, funded as a Best Practice Network project under the eContentplus programme of the European Commission.

EuropeanaLocal is one of a suite of additional projects aimed at developing Europeana, the prototype for which went live in November 2008. Europeana provides access to 4 million digital items from libraries and galleries across Europe.

EuropeanaLocal will play an important role in ensuring that the digital content provided by Europe’s local and regional cultural institutions is represented in Europeana. The project is intended to devise the technology to improve the interoperability of the content held by regional and local institutions and make it accessible through the Europeana portal.

EuropeanaLocal will work to develop processes through which local and regional institutions can easily make their content available to Europeana during and after the project.
