3.2 Digital Books

An Chomhairle digitised a selection of historic titles of national and local interest to create a Digital Book Collection on www.askaboutireland.ie.

Over 300 titles are included creating a national online resource which provides access to notable works such as Ernest Shackleton’s South: The Story of the 1914-1917 Expedition (1927); Richard Twiss’ A Tour in Ireland (1777); Taylor & Skinner’s 1778 Road Maps of Ireland, and Glimpses of an Irish Felon’s Prison Life, by Thomas J Clarke, published in 1922.

Titles relating to individual counties include Joyce’s Neighbourhood of Dublin (1921); Hardiman’s History of Galway (1821); Ryland’s History of the County and City of Waterford (1933), the Royal Dublin Society Statistical Surveys carried out the in the 19th century and covering eighteen counties in total.

Kiltartan Wonder BookRichly illustrated books such as the Hibernian Atlas compiled by Scale in 1776 and Lady Gregory’s Kiltartan Wonder Book are available to view as flick books, allowing the student or general user to browse the pages, almost as if holding a book.
